The story centers around Frederic, who, having just celebrated is 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. According to the apprenticeship indentures, he is to remain apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two youngsters instantly fall in love. Frederic soon learns that with love, life never is without complications: he is much more of a youngster than he thought! He was born on February 29. So, technically, he has celebrated far less than 21 birthdays, and hence, reck'ning by his natal day, he is a little boy of five ~ and a little bit over. So, being a slave of duty, Frederic realizes he must serve as a pirate apprentice for another 63 years. Happily, Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully. Must Mabel wait for 63 years to marry her Frederic?
